Centre of Excellence Memory of Slovakia
Memory of Slovakia - National Center of Excellence in Research, Protection and Accessibility of Cultural and Scientific Heritage (ITMS No. 26220120061) is a project of a top digitization center, which is located within the University Library of the University of Žilina. The Center is equipped with a state-of-the-art technology, which makes it the best-quality workplace of its kind in Slovakia and may compete with other European centers of excellence. The students of mediamatics and cultural heritage studies working in the Center gain a unique experience useful for their future jobs, science and research.
Within the Center of Excellence, the following laboratories were built:

- Laboratory of research on techniques of presentation of cultural and scientific heritage objects

The core activities of the project include the creation of the Center of Excellence focused on the research, protection and presentation of cultural and scientific heritage, the creation of a Center’s long-term sustainability strategy, the coordination of activities, the dissemination of research results that can be achieved thanks to modern infrastructure and ICT equipment of the Center. In order to achieve significant results, several activities have been identified within several research plans which will be pilot programs at the Center level and will demonstrate its potential. Basic research activities in the project include: research and development of science communication technologies and technologies of making digital content accessible, research on restoration, preservation and protection of cultural heritage objects and fundamental research of historical library documents and fonds.

Establishing the Center of Excellence on research, protection and presentation of cultural and scientific heritage has created a space for a presentation of cultural and scientific heritage and has produced unique outcomes of a basic research in the following areas: creation, processing, preservation and making digital cultural and scientific content focused on education, restoration, preservation and protection of cultural heritage objects accessible, and in the field of a basic research of historical books and fonds. The implementation of the submitted project has made it possible to increase the potential of a basic and an applied research and development in the Slovak Republic in the field of library and information science and in the study program of library and information studies (Mediamatics and Cultural Heritage) with an impact on educational institutions as well as strategic industries (creative industry). We consider links to outputs of the OPIS project, the EUROPEANA digital library, the UNESCO´s Memory of the World project to be essencial from the point of view of the research topic of the submitted project.At a regional level, the project will enable an interested entity to use unique digitization technologies, scanners, presentation technologies and know-how in the relevant field.

During the project's sustainability period, activities focus on increasing the quality and efficiency of research and development in the field of cultural and scientific heritage and raising awareness of the cultural heritage of the Slovak Republic. Unexplored parts of research are being revealed and presentations of the results obtained are being made available to a broad professional and lay public.

Since 2010, there have been several dozens and nowadays we can speak of nearly two hundred significant scientific studies, professional studies and articles, books of abstracts or collective monographs and documents created thanks to the project. These present all the layers of research under the Memory of Slovakia project as defined in the project description. Many of them are available online (link under the bibliographical description of the article), all others are physically available at the Department of Mediamatics and Cultural Heritage of the Faculty of Humanities of University of Žilina in Žilina.
